| The myths and facts about Granite. Myth 1: Granite can harbor harmful bacteria. Facts: When this question was put to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) they could not find a single case where it has been proven that granite will harbor bacteria, more so the lack of keeping ones counter top clean on a regular bases is the largest cause of food contamination. Myth 2: Granite contains harmful radon gases. Facts: The Marble Institute of America undertook an investigation of this claim and discovered the real truth about radon. After a long and extensive study, they concluded that actual levels of radon gas emission from granite are so low as to be insignificant and generally represent no threat to the health and well-being of people who live or work in buildings with granite counter tops, floors or wall tiles or any other furnishings made from granite. In terms of construction material radon emission from concrete, cement and gypsum could be of grater concern. Myth 3: Granite can not be repaired once it is scratched. Facts: Most granite surfaces are nearly impossible to scratch. This is what makes them such great choices for kitchen and bathroom counter tops. The simplest way to prove this is to take a piece of granite and try to scratch it with a knife, then take the same knife and do the same test to a solid surfaces and compare the end results. Myth 4: Solid surfaces will not stain and granite will. Facts: In the event that some solid surfaces material are made with natural stone, then what is the difference between natural stone found in solid surfaces and that of granite? The answer..... Nothing Myth 5: There are no granite sinks available. Facts: This is untrue, there are many companies that fabricate granite as well as marble sinks. These sinks are starting to show up in most of the more prestigious homes around the world. They add a very unique and elegant look to both the kitchens and baths. Myth 6: Solid surfaces will not burn or be effected by heat. Facts: We know that this is true of granite but we find this may not be the case with solid surfaces. One manufacture claims that their materials is heat resistance to 212 degrees F all though this is good the average burner on a stove can get up to 400 degree F and higher. Need we say any more. Myth 7: Granite counter tops can not be made seamless. Facts: This is the first one they may be close to true. However there are now methods for seaming granite slabs so that the seams are extremely thin and barely noticeable. Many types of granite can be purchased in large sizes as long as 120 inches and more, when properly places and laid out the seams will not be a problem. This is hardly a reason for not going with granite. Myth 8: Granite is difficult to clean. Facts: Any one that works with or owns a granite counter top will know that it is very easy to take care of a granite counter top. There are even disinfectants cleaners now available for both granite and solid surfaces. Back To Home Page |
